The Fifth North American Conference on Spirituality and Social Work 
“Spirituality and Scarcity:
The Role of Spirituality in Practice and Research in Scarce Times”

The Fifth North American Conference on Spirituality and Social Work was a joint international conference of the Canadian Society for Spirituality and Social Work, and the Society for Spirituality and Social Work (USA). It was hosted at the Faculty of Social Work, University of Calgary.

Keynote Speakers:

Richard Wagamese
 is one of Canada's foremost Native authors and storytellers. He is a member of the Objibway Nation who has worked as a professional writer since 1979 he's been a newspaper columnist and reporter, radio and television broadcaster and producer, documentary producer and the author of seven titles from major Canadian publishers with two new works waiting in the wings. He also works simultaneously in newspaper, radio and television.

Alean Al-Krenawi is the Killam Visiting Scholar at the Faculty of Social Work, University of Calgary and is the former Chair of the Spitzer School of Social Work, Ben Gurion University of the Negev. Professor Al-Krenawi has written extensively on social and mental health service delivery in the Muslim Arab world, and brings his insight from his cross-cultural research, and work with Muslim communities to our conference. Dr. Al-Krenawi has earned an international reputation for his numerous scholarly publications

Highlights: Thursday, June 17 was a day of pre-workshops and concluded in the evening with Richard Wagamese's Opening Keynote Address. Alean Al-Krenawi’s keynote was on Saturday morning.
Thursday, June 17, included various workshops such as: Aboriginal Spirituality and Sweat lodge by Casey Eaglespeaker, Energies Therapy by Douglas Chung, and a Trauma Workshop by Judy Chew. Friday, June 18 and Saturday June 19 included a variety of academic papers on diverse themes exploring spirituality in the healing process, in social work education, in activism and community work, and in self-nurture for resilience and compassion.

PRE-CONFERENCE WORKSHOP LEADERS:

Casey Eagle Speaker – Aboriginal Spirituality
Casey Eagle Speaker is a Blackfoot Elder and spiritual advisor well known for his work with youth, university students and with person struggling with addictions. Casey is the spiritual advisor at the Native Centre at the University of Calgary, heads the Aboriginal program at Hull Homes, a facility serving troubled youth, advising and ceremonies, is on the board of Ghost River Rediscovery and advises at Sunshine Rehabilitation services. He has been a consultant on numerous projects involving Aboriginal people, including those establishing healing centers within the local health services and advising on programs for suicide prevention among youth. He regularly conducts workshops on Aboriginal ceremonies and practices and offers sweat lodge ceremonies both for the people in the organizations he serves as well as members of the public. He is the recipient of the Chief John Crowchild award, among others. Casey is an honored and respected member of the Aboriginal community.

Dr. Judy Chew – Trauma Work
Judy Chew, MSW, PhD., is a registered psychologist, Training Coordinator at the Counselling Center, University of Calgary. She holds the positions of Adjunct Associate Professor in the Department of Applied Psychology and Adjunct Professor in the Faculty of Social Work, University of Calgary. Her professional interests and experience include training/supervision, psychology of men, counseling women, family of origin work, relationship decision-making, spirituality, group work, and resolving abuse issues. Dr. Chew’s places value on the promotion of individual choices that enhance emotional, psychological, spiritual, physical and social wellbeing.

Dr. Douglas Chung – Energy Therapies
Douglas K. Chung, MSW, MA, Ph.D., LMSW, is a professor in the School of Social Work at Grand Valley State University in Michigan since 1989. He is the first social work scholar to introduce ancient Chinese Qigong Technologies into human services. He has taught Qigong Therapies courses to graduate students and served as Qigong therapist and master since 1995. Trained as a researcher in mental health, community organization, and family therapy, he has extensive practice and teaching experience and has publications in cross-cultural social work education and practice. He is engaged in building culturally competent models for personal and social transformation through the integration of Energy Therapies in human services. He was one of the editors and authors of Social Work with Asian Americans. He is a Qigong Practitioner (since the age of 17), researcher, workshop designer, and conductor for human services. He is the Executive Director of the Asian Center. He has published many books and articles including: Qigong Therapies: A Self Care Approach, and Chinese Social Work in the 21st Century, and is currently writing Energy Therapies and Meridian Therapies: A Self Care Approach. He offers various workshops of energy therapies, including Qigong Therapies, Sound Therapies, Meditation, Tai Chi Therapies, Water Therapies, and Group Energy Therapies.

The proceedings include papers, overheads, and outlines of workshops, that have been submitted by scholars, practitioners and students who presented at the Fifth North American Conference on Spirituality and Social Work (2010). These proceedings provide a good representation of the variety of workshops and papers presented.

These proceedings are made available with publication support from St. Thomas University, and the social work programs at the University of Calgary, Laurentian University, and Wilfrid Laurier University.
